Car Security

  • Always lock your car, even when you are driving someplace in car, sitting in traffic, or parked quietly.
  • Check the back seat before entering your car. Make sure no one is hiding back there. Stop car jackings by being alert and aware, and keep your car doors locked!
  • Be sure and always keep valuables out of sight. The trunk is usually the best place. Also be sure and never leave money, credit cards or checkbooks in the car.
  • Don't make it obvious that you are a tourist. Keep all maps and travel brochures in the glove compartment or in the trunk. Tourists are more vulnerable when out of their own domain and many street thugs are aware of this.
  • Always park in bright, well lit areas. There is less of a chance of a criminal causing you problems in an area where they will be seen, identified, or caught on a surveillance camera!
  • Make sure and always keep the gas tank full as possible. You don't want to run out of gas in unfamiliar surroundings.
If you routinely park your vehicle on the street, or in an unsecured carport or open garage, please take a moment to see if all doors are still locked and notice if someone could be hiding inside the vehicle. Carjackings can be avoided many times by keeping vehicles locked.

Secure your garage doors and windows with home security garage door stop alarms, and glass breakage window alarms.

If you choose to carry personal protection, such as pepper spray, or personal alarm, be sure you take the time to know how it works. Always keep personal protection devices handy, and ready to use, instead of desperately searching for it in a glove compartment, purse, or under the seat.

Vehicle Maintenance

Having your car breakdown in a bad neighborhood can be costly and dangerous!
  • Have your tires inspected frequently. Tire pressure changes in cold weather and warm weather. Be sure you've checked the pressure as the seasons change. Stopping to fix a flat tire leaves you ... vulnerable.
  • Have a good mechanic inspect your engine, brakes,  transmission, and all fluids.
  • Make sure your battery is in great condition.
Keeping your vehicle in excellent working condition may get you to where you are going ... safely and securely.
