Hotel Security

  • Figure out the most direct route to and from your room. Be sure and locate the fire escapes, elevators and the nearest phone. Many hotels are required to put that information right on the inside of the main entrance door to your room.
  • Whether in your room or leaving your room, make sure all doors and windows are always locked. You may consider bringing portable door knob and door stop alarms, or window alarms. They are small affordable lightweight devices that will sound an alarm when either a door or window is being opened. Lock your door at all times!
  • Before you unlock the door ... use the peephole to identify anyone at the door and only open the door if it is someone you are expecting. If someone you were not expecting comes to the door, (without opening the door) ask them who they are and what they want. If they say they are from the hotel and you were not expecting anyone from the hotel, don't hesitate to call the front desk and ask.
  • Never leave money, checks, credit cards, car keys or personal identifications such as a drivers license, social security card or passports in your room. Take them with you or lock them in the room safe if one is available. Diversion safes can be used instead because they look like ordinary items you would use while traveling.
  • If you are traveling on business, or on vacation, prepare, but relax in your hotel room with a door stop alarm, and any personal protection alarms ready to protect you in your room.
Report any suspicious behavior to the hotel/motel manager and report any lost or stolen items to both the manager and the police.

Being prepared always gives you better options, and means a you will have more confidence in a stressful situation.
