Traveling for your company, or going on vacation?

An obviously empty home can be a burglar magnet!

You will be more at ease, and have a better time knowing you've secured your home against burglars. Make sure you put your home security at the top of the 'Trip Planning List'!

Your home is a big investment - worth protecting!

Most burglaries happen to an empty or unoccupied home. Before you go away please keep the following home security tips in mind.

  • Make sure all doors and windows are securely locked. It is not a bad idea to have a wired or wireless home security system in place so that if a burglar were to break into your home, the alarm would sound, scaring the burglar off. Door braces, door stop alarms and glass breakage alarms are very effective protection.
  • Do not leave a house key outside your home in an obvious place like under a doormat, on the ledge of a door or under a flower pot. Burglars know all about these “so called” secret hiding places.
  • Make your house appear “lived in”. Install timers on lights to go on at night, keep your lawn mowed & watered and arrange for a neighbor to pick up your mail. Also be sure and have someone pick up your newspapers, packages or sales brochures that may be left at your front door. When these things start piling up after a couple of days it is very clear that no one is home and can be very inviting to a burglar. Don’t give them that advantage.
  • If you have a cell phone, it may not be a bad idea to have your home calls forwarded to the cell phone. If you don’t wish to have your trip interrupted with phone calls consider asking a neighbor or friend if they would accept your forwarded calls to them. This way no one would know if you were home or not just by simply making a phone call. This is how many burglars find their targets. Turn the 'ringer' down so no one can hear it from outside your the doors or windows in your home.
  • Never leave a message on your phone answering machine saying you are gone for a while.
  • Always leave your contact information & trip plans with a friend or a trusted neighbor in case of an emergency and they need to get a hold of you.
