Travel Safety

Once you have your home safe & secure with your wireless home security system, you are ready to go. But of course not without a travel safety list:

  • If you bring personal protection devices, or personal alarms and expect to fly on a commercial airline double-check BEFORE entering the airport, and be 100% SURE they will be legally allowed in your checked luggage. Carrying them into the airport, on your person is not allowed. Period. Also be sure these personal protection devices are legal at your destination point.
  • Always use traveler’s checks or credit cards instead of cash when possible. If you must carry large sums of cash, do not openly display it. In fact it is not a bad idea to carry a second wallet with a few singles and some old expired credit cards. This way if you are mugged, you give them that wallet instead of the wallet with all of your money and much needed credit cards. The mugger takes off, you are only out a few bucks, and your trip is not ruined. (Small diversion safes are a great option, too!)
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. This doesn’t mean you need to be paranoid, just alert. Know what’s going on around you.
  • If possible it is always a good idea to carry a cell phone with you wherever you go. Keep in mind there are areas where a cell phone may not work.
  • Do not stop to pick up hitchhikers. This includes someone whose car appears to be broken down. It could be a trick.
  • If your car breaks down and you don’t have a cell phone, raise the hood on your car and wait inside with the doors locked. When someone stops to help, just ask them to call the police or a tow truck. Do not get out of your car.
  • If you suspect someone is following you, drive to the nearest police or fire station. If that is not an option drive to the nearest public establishment and sound your horn. If you have a cell phone and you are in fear that you may be in danger, don’t hesitate to call 911. Be sure to know where you are so you can tell them your exact location.
  • When stopping for gas be sure the area you are in is safe. Usually graffiti on the walls and people standing around loitering can be warnings of dangerous 'unfriendly' areas to avoid. Getting gas frequently in well-traveled 'safe areas' may help you avoid running low on gas in a 'bad area'.
  • Always remember you are more vulnerable in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Always carry a map, and know where you are while you traveling. Observe landmarks and remember road signs as you pass them. No one can help you if you can't tell them where you are!
  • Tell a friend or family member your scheduled trip itinerary, plus how and where you can be contacted while away. Tell them the time/date you expect to return home, and the route or method you will use to get there (planes, trains, buses, automobiles).

Many people choose to carry personal protection security devices for extra added protection while on vacation. These devices include pepper sprays, stun guns & high decibel personal alarms, all of which are non lethal and are relied on by policemen and security guards everywhere. Again: if you are flying to your destination do not bring these items without first double-checking with the airline, or airport security to be sure they are legal to bring into the airport.

Bringing your personal protection devices can be a good idea, but it is very important that you know how to use the device you choose to carry. They are all very simple to use but if you don’t know how to use your self defense personal protection device it will not do you any good and could actually be used against you. So please take a few minutes and learn how to use it.
